Island Studies Journal has been published as an independent, open access, non-fee charging journal since its launching in 2006. ISJ’s strong interdisciplinarity, international profile, and rigorous peer review and editorial processes have ensured that the journal is indexed in the two most prestigious global bibliometric indices, Scopus and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). ISJ thus combines a radically open and accessible publishing model with the highest professional and academic distinctions.
The journal was first established at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Institute of Island Studies, with Godfrey Baldacchino serving as founding Editor, a position he held until 2016. In 2021, Island Studies Journal was formally established as an independent charitable association, registered in Denmark (Tax Number: 42309141).
ISJ’s institutional home is Fróðskaparsetur Føroya/University of the Faroe Islands (2021-2024).
